Yesterday was a long day getting from Chongqing to Guangzhou. By the time we made it to the Victory, we were wiped. I was far too wiped to make an update. We had dinner, gave Sophie a bath and a bottle and we were all three down for the count. Everything went well, though. Sophie did well on her first flight, as you can see….

Sophie’s first plane ride. Zzzzzzz. (Clearly it was an exciting event for her)
She slept through most of it, (the Ergo puts her right out), even the takeoffs and landings. She fussed once because we weren’t entertaining her well enough (snort), but other than that she was a Buddha baby. She is (in general) a Buddha baby. So far she takes most things in stride. She cries when she’s tired and when she’s having a poo. We always know when she’s having a poo. When she goes down for a nap or to sleep at night, we must stay with her or she’ll cry. Usually she falls asleep on or near one of us and we move her to the crib. She gets quiet and watchful in a crowd and didn’t make a peep during her medical exam this morning.
In the hotel room and with us in general, she simply doesn’t want to be put down and left for anything. She always wants interaction, constantly wants contact. I think this is a good sign.
Today it’s a lot of paperwork and housekeeping stuff. Soon it’s time for us to go and have the “red couch” photo taken. That’s like the group baby photo in Chongqing, but on the famous red couch in the White Swan hotel. We’re not dressing her in her little pink dress however. It’s cold here! So far the weather has been the opposite of what I expected. I thought it would be cool in Chongqing (it was yucky hot) and hot in Guangzhou (It’s very cool here). Oh well.
ETA: During the red couch photo tonight, daddy was in front of the couch (I was in back) and in the chaos and tumult of thirteen crying, floppy can’t-sit-up babies on the couch, Sophie found her daddy’s face, held his gaze and gave him a big smile. This is good. Maybe we’re making some progress in the attachment department!
I feel much better here in Guangzhou. There are trees and there’s vegetation. Yay for green things! In Chongqing there’s just buildings and buildings everywhere in all directions. You drive for forty minutes and you’re still. in. buildings! The air is better here too. It was sad to leave
Chongqing, but my body is much happier here. I have a sinus infection, but it’s getting better. We managed to avoid the stomach flu (knock on wood) that has ripped through our travel group and even landed one bio daughter in the hospital in Chongqing. Poor girl.
We found some great books and CDs here to help Sophie (and me) learn Mandarin. We also got a wonderful descriptive book about Chongqing. Mayne one day when Sophie is older we’ll go back to Chongqing so she can see where she was born.
Oh…Sophie is 18.5 pounds and 28 inches long! Big baby. My back feels every ounce, let me tell you! Although I must say the Ergo rocks. My back doesn’t hurt in that unless I wear her for a very long time.

Sophie’s smile!

I’ll try and get James to update in French tonight! We’re almost home. Almost….
